Know Your Roots: Bronx Genealogy

The Bronx Genealogy Project introduces students to the methods of researching and interpreting their personal history while strengthening their academic ability for the collegiate world. This project offers skills to retrieve information from various book and web sources, electronic databases, and visits to libraries, museums, and research archives. Students will be given weekly assignments and will also compile a scrapbook with all their research findings. This project adheres to ELA Common Core State Standards for Literary and Informational Text Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and History/Social Studies.

Family Tree & Interviews
Assignments give students practice on how to be a historian by asking relevant questions. Students are given a list of questions to ask an older family member in order to explore their own backgrounds.

Using Online Databases
Throughout the six sessions, students will be utilizing the genealogy database ancestry.com. They will be given instruction on how to read a census and use clues from their family interviews to begin to piece together their family’s story.

Scrapbooks
The culminating project is creating a genealogy scrapbook. This includes the family tree, family interviews and data sheets, maps, photographs, and any other ephemera students want to include to make their scrapbook unique.
