The Hudson River Foundation has underwritten a series of walking tours and workshops that
encourage public usage of The Bronx's numerous greenways and parks. These programs are free to
members and the general public. Please check our website for new events, date confirmations, and

Belmont Stakes Commemorative Treks
Part I Sunday, June 8, 2008 - 9:30 AM
Part II Saturday, July 5, 2008 - 9:30 AM
The Belmont Stakes. While run at Belmont Park in Nassau County since 1905, the Belmont was first run in
1867 in what today is The Bronx. The 2-part hike will trace the history of this great race. Tours will be led by
Nestor Danyluk is a long-time BCHS member and city planner that specializes in long-distance historic treks
throughout the metropolitan area. Please bring snacks, water, and water-friendly footgear.
Part I - We will explore the area that once was home to one of AmericaÕs grandest racetracks, Jerome Park.
We will meet in front of the Burger King at the end of the #1 subway at West 242nd Street and Broadway for a
10:00 AM departure. Please bring snacks, at least one liter of water, and $2.00 in small change or a valid
MetroCard for the return bus fare back to 242nd Street.
Part II - We will retrace the hoofbeats of famous horses and jockeys, and see remnants associated with was
once billed as "the most beautiful racetrack in the world." Meet at the Bedford Park Cafe at the southwest
corner of Webster Avenue and Bedford Park Boulevard. Come early and have breakfast!
Accessible by the Bx-26, Bx-41, and Bx-55 buses at 9:45 AM or on the Westchester bound platform of Metro NorthÕs Botanical
Garden Station at 10:00 AM. Bring snacks and at least one liter of water, and have $2.00 in small change or a
valid MetroCard for the return bus fare.

"The Great Bronx River Expedition" by Dr. Gary Hermalyn
All illustrated workshop that discusses a recent expedition down river by noted historian and Explorer's club
member Gary Hermalyn. This workshop will focus on the massive effort to clean up the river, and what was
discovered on this expedition.
Saturday, July 19, 2008 - 1:00 PM
The Creation of The Bronx Park System by Anthony C. Greene, M.S. Ed
An illustrated workshop that discuses the creation of this unique, effective park system. The focus will be on
urban planning, and the effects of the park system on the environment.
Yankee Stadium- A Rapidly Changing Environment
August 9, 2008 - 11:00 AM
We will meet at southwest intersection of 161st street and the Grand Concourse. This walk will focus on the
environmental changes taking place in the neighborhood surrounding the new Yankee stadium site. The tour
will go circle the outside of both stadiums, visit local parks, and discuss the overall impact of what is being
done in the area. Anthony Greene will lead this tour.
Full Day Tour of Pelham Bay Park
September 20, 2008
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
The tour will meet at the turnstiles of the # 5 Pelham Parkway Station at Pelham Parkway North and Esplanade
at 9:00 AM. The Bx-12 runs near the stop and parking is available on local streets near the station. (We
recommend you get a MetroCard with at least two fares. If coming by subway, do NOT exit the turnstiles.) We
will pass by a market where you can get snacks, however everyone should carry at least 1 liter of water. Sturdy,
preferably waterproof boots are a must. We expect to reach City Island by about 4:00 PM.

Save the Date: Edgar Allan Poe Cottage Fundraiser
On October 17, 2008 from 6:00 PM-9:00 PM at the National Arts Club

The Bronx County Historical Society is relaunching an endowment campaign for the Edgar Allan Poe
Cottage. This is an excellent way to show your support and increase your level of participation with
the Society. Our kick-off to this campaign is a night with Poe at the National Arts Club where we
have cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and discuss Poe CottageÕs future, the construction of the new Visitors
Center, and be treated to an evening of entertainment culminating with a one-act play about the last
day of Poe's life. If you are interested in sponsoring this event, please contact our office for more
