Map It! Exploring Your School’s Neighborhood

Map-It! is an exciting project that involves students visualizing and studying their school’s neighborhood with historic resources.  This project exposes students to various materials and offers demonstrations of different methods of historic research. With the collections and publications of The Bronx County Historical Society, students receive a hands-on experience working with primary source materials, exhibitions, neighborhood observations, and more. Pupils create an exhibit based on the history of their school’s neighborhood, with a map, illustrations, and their captions and a short overview of the history of the neighborhood. Map-It! allows for the integration of current curricula on immigration, the American Revolution, industrialization, and the Civil War.  Students will demonstrate an understanding of historical connections to geographical sites in their school’s neighborhood as they build on their research. Students are divided into teams responsible for contributing to their final exhibit.  The small group structure allows one to focus on writing, illustration, and design tasks – all necessary tools to convey the story of one’s neighborhood to another audience.

By the end of the unit, students will be familiar with, and now have practical experience in, the concepts and job skills associated with exhibit and map production utilizing historic research.  All lessons and sessions are made in compliance with New York State Social Studies Learning Standards and the Common Core.Thinking about having this wonderful program at your school?
