RESEARCH center

The Bronx County Historical Society Research Center consists of the Research Library and the Bronx County Archives, both of which provide unparalleled resources for researching The Bronx, its history, and its peoples.

The Research Library contains an extensive collection of more than 198,000 books, pamphlets, still images, manuscripts and other paper ephemera, recorded sounds and moving images, and microfilm and microfiche. Located in the main office of the Historical Society at 3309 Bainbridge Avenue, across the street from the Museum of Bronx History, the library is intimate and accessible by bus and subway. It is a major resource center for high school and college students, artists, journalists, activists, government researchers, and scholars who have a need, or curiosity, to learn more about The Bronx.

The Bronx County Archives were established in 1974, when The Bronx County responsibility for nearly a million items across dozens of municipal collections. Since that date, the archival collections have grown considerably, both in number and in scope.

  • A complete listing of collections within The Bronx County Archives can be found here.

Today, The Bronx County Archives consist of more that 160 separate collections, which contain original sound recordings and moving images, documents, manuscripts, still images on various photographic media, books, maps, and city directories going back to the early nineteenth century until the present, covering not only Bronx history and culture but also the history of New York City and lower Westchester County. There is also an important collection of Bronx newspapers housed at The Bronx County Archives, beginning with the first issue of The Bronx Home News from 1907.

An ever-increasing number of archival collections specifically document Black and Puerto Rican experiences in The Bronx. This is due in large part to the Bronx African American History Project, which the Society started in 2002 with Fordham University, and The Bronx Latino History Project, a joint undertaking of the Historical Society and Lehman College. Through the medium of oral histories, both of these community-based projects have been collecting rich historical documentation of various communities, political and cultural movements, and more. The projects additionally continue to generate or acquire relevant archival collections.
